Just what is this strange 'shiny' object on Mars?

Universe Today have highlighted another strange photo from the Curiosity Mars Rover - this time it's a strange shiny object protruding from a rock on the Martian surface.

It looks like it could be metal, but current theories suggest it may be a rock of different composition which is more resistant to erosion - the smooth edges making it appear metallic in the sunlight. It's not very big either - probably less than half a centimeter, but it's very intriguing.

No word from JPL yet, but we're keen to hear what their take on the object is.
